Enter to win the new Bones book!

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

bones-to-ashes-book.jpg Check out the new book by Kathy Reichs, creator of Bones, and the real-life version of Temperance Brennan. And don’t miss out on the chance to enter to win your very own copy! Read on for an excert from her latest, Bones to Ashes:

Babies die. People vanish. People die. Babies vanish.

I was hammered early by those truths. Sure, I had a kid’s understanding that mortal life ends. At school, the nuns talked of heaven, purgatory, limbo, and hell. I knew my elders would “pass.” That’s how my family skirted the subject. People passed. Went to be with God. Rested in peace. So I accepted, in some ill-formed way, that earthly life was temporary. Nevertheless, the deaths of my father and baby brother slammed me hard.

And Évangéline Landry’s disappearance simply had no explanation.

But I jump ahead.

It happened like this.

As a little girl, I lived on Chicago’s South Side, in the less fashionable outer spiral of a neighborhood called Beverly. Developed as a country retreat for the city’s elite following the Great Fire of 1871, the hood featured wide lawns and large elms, and Irish Catholic clans whose family trees had more branches than the elms. A bit down-at-the-heels then, Beverly would later be gentrified by boomers seeking greenery within proximity of the Loop.

A farmhouse by birth, our home predated all its neighbors. Green-shuttered white frame, it had a wraparound porch, an old pump in back, and a garage that once housed horses and cows.

My memories of that time and place are happy. In cold weather, neighborhood kids skated on a rink created with garden hoses on an empty lot. Daddy would steady me on my double blades, clean slush from my snowsuit when I took a header. In summer, we played kick ball, tag, or Red Rover in the street. My sister, Harry, and I trapped fireflies in jars with hole-punched lids.

During the endless Midwestern winters, countless Brennan aunts and uncles gathered for cards in our eclectically shabby parlor. The routine never varied. After supper, Mama would take small tables from the hall closet, dust the tops, and unfold the legs. Harry would drape the white linen cloths, and I would center the decks, napkins, and peanut bowls.

With the arrival of spring, card tables were abandoned for front porch rockers, and conversation replaced canasta and bridge. I didn’t understand much of it. Warren Commission. Gulf of Tonkin. Khrushchev. Kosygin. I didn’t care. The banding together of those bearing my own double helices assured me of well-being, like the rattle of coins in the Beverly Hillbillies bank on my bedroom dresser. The world was predictable, peopled with relatives, teachers, kids like me from households similar to mine. Life was St. Margaret’s school, Brownie Scouts, Mass on Sunday, day camp in summer.

Then Kevin died, and my six-year-old universe fragmented into shards of doubt and uncertainty. In my sense of world order, death took the old, great-aunts with gnarled blue veins and translucent skin. Not baby boys with fat red cheeks.

Like it so far? Enter to win and read on!

There’s a new geek on Bones!

Monday, August 27th, 2007

john-francis-daley.jpg John Francis Daley, otherwise known as character Sam Weir, on the NBC series, “Freaks and Geeks,” is scheduled to play a therapist named Dr. Sweet in at least four episodes. Not sure what this means for our favorite therapist Gordon, Gordon Garrett… but whatever the outcome, the promise of “couples therapy” for Booth and Bones should make it worth our while!
(If you ask me, I think he looks more like another Zach than a shrink, but maybe that’s just me.)

Another Bones birthday

What has David “snickering”?

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

I love the Watch with Kristin blog at E!online. She gets some of the greatest scoops… Check out her latest on Bones:

Where Are They Now: According to show runner Hart Hanson, when the series premieres in the fall, we’ll pick up several months after last season’s finale, having missed “the amount of time that actually has passed.” He also says this about the only thing you really care about (admit it!), the Bones and Booth romance: “We want to keep them apart as long as we can without annoying the audience, and there are a number of ways to do that. We use a number of little steam valves to release the pressure.” Boreanaz snickers at this, and Hanson shoots back, “I didn’t mean masturbation, David!” Also, according to Ms. Emily Deschanel, this season the show explores “how being left at the altar affected them.”

Zack’s Back: Eric Millegan (and Hanson) confirm Zack Addy will be back this season, but they won’t confirm when or how. Eric did say, “He was sent home from Iraq early, and we’re going to explore why…”

Squint Love: Michaela Conlin (Angela Montenegro) says of Angela and Jack‘s romance, “Angela is not one to be pinned down. She’s a free spirit who really fell in love. We’ve been working on finding my ex-husband. It should be pretty interesting.” My man, T.J. Thyne (Dr. Jack Hodgins), meanwhile, says, “I think Jack is madly, deeply and passionately in love with her.” All together now: Awww…

Shallow Impressions: I can report from here in the catbird seat that Boreanaz’s biceps are ridiculous—good ridiculous. He looks great on the show in the suits, but I think maybe a tight T-shirt now and again wouldn‘t be such a bad idea…

The Missing Episode: According to executive producer Stephen Nathan, “Player Under Pressure,” the ep that was pulled in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, will be reworked. The new version preserves the mystery elements and will bring the romantic storyline up to date. He expects it might air Dec. 7, and the old material (wherein Jack proposed to Angela) will hopefully appear on a DVD…sometime somewhere.

Extra Eps: Nathan tells me the network definitely wants the 28-episode season (because of the potential writers’ strike and because reruns don‘t “work” anymore), but he’s afraid postproduction limitations may prevent that from actually happening. He expects no fewer than 24 eps but says 28 might be stretching it. Start sending your nudge letters now.

Scene Shots: Exec producer Barry Josephson says they built out the FBI set this season, so look for more focus on the federales. And as a tease, he adds that the pressure releases for the Booth-Bones sexual tension may include more “third parties.”

Featurette: Emily did a DVD commentary with her real-life father, Caleb Deschanel, and Stephen Fry for “The Glowing Bones in the Old Stone House.”

I’m disappointed to hear they may be bringing in some more “third parties,” but I guess I understand why they would. And I guess that as much as I want to see Angela and Hodgins together, this newest twist to keep them apart - in so far as them not being married - is a pretty good storyline.

I also hate to hear that we may not get to see the missing episode… I guess that’s just one more great reason for us to all buy the DVD when it comes out!

David’s collector set available soon!

Don’t miss out on the complete 5-season collector’s set of Angel that’s coming out October 30th! For his fans, it’s hours of David enjoyment, and for us who sadly miss Buffy and Angel, it’s a must-have! (Sure, the cost is $139.98, but for 30 discs, isn’t it worth it?) Oh, and if you pre-order it from Amazon.com, you can get it for $97.99!

Bones moves to Tuesdays

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

The fall season is just around the corner and Bones will be starting back before too long - so make sure you know when and where to find it! This fall, Bones will be moving from their previous home on Wednesday nights to Tuesdays. According to an article on Actress Archives, “It doesn’t hurt that Bones, a hit for Fox, now doesn’t have to worry about facing a formidable time slot with ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice, NBC’s Bionic Woman, The CW’s Gossip Girl, and CBS’ Criminal Minds.” Like we would miss Bones anyway!

It’s okay David, we still love you!

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

An article in The Buffalo News lists “The best and worst from the TV critics tour”, and our own David Boreanaz made the list. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t one of the “best” categories…

Worst Interview: David Boreanaz, the co-star of “Bones,? claimed he read the books on which the series is based and talked about his character in it. Then the show’s creator told him his character wasn’t in the book. Boreanaz is an extremely appealing actor but he clearly benefits when writers put words in his mouth.

That’s okay, we all know how accurate the press can be sometimes!

Who wore it best?

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

In a recent issue of UsMagazine, Emily was featured in a “Who wore it best” contest. She was up against actress Dominique Swain, both of whom were wearing a beautiful red satin dress by designer David Meister. Guess who was the winner? Of course it could only be our very own beautiful Miss Emily!

About Watching Bones

Who doesn’t love forensic anthropology? Okay, so maybe not, but throw in David Boreanaz and an FBI agent and former sniper along with Emily Deschanel as anthropologist-by-day and best selling author-by-night, as well as other awesome cast members TJ Thyne, Micheala Conlin, Tamara Taylor, and Eric Millegan, and you’ve got a mix for an awesome show. That’s just what you get with Bones. A crime drama that has great wit, great writing, and obviously a great cast; Deschanel’s character Temperance “Bones? Brennan is socially illiterate, although brilliant, and balances out Boreanaz’s character Agent Seeley Booth as they work together to solve sometimes years-old murders. Backed by the “squints? at the Jeffersonian Museum, this team is unstoppable, but it’s the people and the relationships that really make the show. Don’t miss a minute of it!
