Bones returns! Season 3 premiere
Tonight we finally got back on track with our Bones fix! Now moved to Fox Tuesdays before House (which is a great show worth catching by the way), Bones started the season off running. With the story encompassing the aftermath of the Angela/Hodgins wedding where Booth and Bones were left standing at the alter, Angela/Hodgins work to resolve Angela’s little marriage problem, Brennan’s questionable avoidance of Booth, her attempt to “replace” Zach, a cannibal, a silver skeleton, bald Zach’s return… need I go on?
Not that I wanted to see Zach replaced, but the new guy applying for Zach’s position was likable enough, and seeing Bones put him through the paces, knowing that she wasn’t going to hire him made me feel kind of bad for him. He was really classy by bowing out so gracefully when Zach did make his reappearance. I’m just glad Zach returned right off so we didn’t have a chance to get attached to a new character. And boy does he look strange with the new haircut!
I’m also glad that we got an explanation as to why he was sent home early. I was worried they would drag it out - but I guess I should have known. Zach’s character isn’t one to beat around the bush. I’m not sure he could.
Cam: Why did they send you back from Iraq?
Zach: I failed to assimilate. Despite my accomplishments, I was detrimental to a military team approach.
Cam: You’re very good for our team approach.
Zach: The army psychologist told me that I should question why the Jeffersonian is the only place that I can fit in.
Cam: All due respect to the army psychiatrist, but, that’s a hell of a lot more than some people get.
Along the line of new looks, I have to say that Hodgins appears a little wane with his new haircut. With the short hair and no facial hair, he almost looks a little sickly as thin as he is. (Still a cutie, though.) However, that doesn’t dim the heat between him and Angela any! He says that “cost is not an issue” when the man - is he a lawyer, an investigator? - tells them that it’s going to cost to find who Angela is married to. No surprise there.
And what was with the weird first suspect, actually second, that was into filming his wife’s “dalliances?” Hmmm… The head of the secret service. Go figure.
Cam: You arrested the deputy director of the secret service for voyarism?
Booth: Yeah. Bones in her office?
Cam: That is awesome. And really, really stupid. You’ve got to love a self-destructive man with values.
And of course, there’s still that great repressed sexual tension with Booth/Bones. The whole episode it appeared that Bones was avoiding Booth - which it turns out she was. Kind of. She kept telling everyone that it was because Zach was gone that she didn’t want to leave the lab. No one believed her, and it almost seemed at times like she was also trying to convice herself. However, when Zach did reappear, she was ready to jump back out into the field with Booth. Yet later, she did an about-face when she admitted to Booth that she was upset at him. Not about arresting her father, but for not trying to talk Zach out of going to Iraq in the first place. Not exactly the “we left you and Booth at the alter” theory Angela had, but still not the “I can’t leave because Zach’s not here” answer Bones was giving everyone.
And don’t you know that Booth loved every minute of jumping on top of Bones when he though there was a bomb in the vault?
Bones: I’m curious. In an esxplosion, how would shutting your eyes help?
Booth: Huh? It just does, okay Bones, it just does.
And who knew there could be so much sexual tenstion in a hand-to-the-lips over the top of a cup of hot coffee? Man this is going to be a great season!

I watched Bones last night and it was delightful. I am also delighted to see that Fox is offering the episodes in full again on their web site. This is a great way to rewatch them the next day for us Bones addicts!
Sadly, I was already very attached to the new character who had to leave when Zach appeared. That guy was delightful with his few appearances. I hope he turns up again somehow.

Since my housemate is addicted to Dancing with the Stars, I Tivoed “Bones” and watched this morning. Excellent start to the season and it looks as if the running story line will give Hodgins full vent for his adorable and encyclopedic conspiracy theory knowledge. He and Angela are so great together and I loved her “get back to me when you catch up” exchange with Brennan.
