Emily supports HR 1326 (chimps)
Saturday, July 4th, 2009We all know and love that Emily Deschanel is very active in the rights of animals. She’s known for being a vegetarian, and has supported various causes over the years. Now, she’s written to Representative Henry Waxman about the Towns-Reichert Great Ape Protection Act, or H.R. 1326. The bill would “phase out invasive research on chimpanzees and release all federally owned chimpanzees to sanctuaries,” according to Emily’s letter.

One of the comments Emily made in her letter was, “It can be easy to forget these animals, who are locked away and out of sight.” That is such a true statement. I am all for the humane treatment of animals, and the fact that Emily pointed out in her letter that chimpanzees do not make good test models for human disease is just another in a long line of reasons to stop testing on them if at all possible. Why continue to put them through a lifetime of lab tests and lab living conditions if the results aren’t accurate to begin with?
Emily tells Rep. Waxman that this bill would allow the chimpanzees to “form bonds with other chimpanzees, bask in the sunlight, and feel the grass and the earth.” What better way to live out the rest of their lives?
You can check out a link from US News to view her entire letter here. I realize that a lot of people have their own personal letter-writers (or whatever they’re officially called), but as far as I know, this is all Emily. She’s very eloquent, and the letter is really well written. Very classy Emily - well done!
