Watching Bones

No one was more surprised than I was to find myself become attached to John Francis Daley’s character on Bones. The concept of them going to “couples therapy” was interesting, but I didn’t see if going too far. Now that the writers have carried the role of Dr. Lance Sweets on for a while, I’ve become attached to him and look forward to seeing him develop. I was a little disappointed to see him hook up with the uber-annoying squint wanna-be, but since she’s not become a regular on the show, I’ll let that pass. Otherwise, his character’s development has been fun to watch and has even had a few interesting twists. Like being from a family of carnies.

In a recent interview, Daley talked about the ongoing development of his character after he was invited to stay on as a recurring character rather than a short guest-star stint. The fact that he and Bones share the common background of being in foster care should (hopefully) come back up in upcoming episodes. We’ve seen in various episodes how Bone’s foster-child status has affected her during a case, so I can imagine it will come up again. Hopefully we’ll learn more about Sweets then too. Also, how can we ignore his carnie connection? (So do they mean that his real parents were carnies and he was left in foster care while they traveled with the circus or that his foster parents were the carnies? Either way, that’s a really interesting story-line to explore!)

Daley also expressed his desire to explore some of his actual interests onscreen - including kung fu and a talent at playing the piano. I can definitely see Sweets playing the piano, but as for the kung fu, well, not so much. Although seeing him attempt to learn kung fu, now that I’ll buy! (Oh, and the recent episode where he posed as a buyer at the Sci-Fi convention for the sword and he dressed in the Trekkie costume that he already had - that was too perfect! So characteristic for Sweets! Loved it!)

Last but not least, Daley addressed the deep, dark secret that his character Sweets has been keeping. You know, the heartbreakingly agonizing secret that Zack isn’t really a murderer? Yeah, that one. He didn’t give us any spoilers or even any real hints, but surely we haven’t heard the last of that…

With a reputation as huge as Star Wars, it would be silly to imagine that there wouldn’t be numerous references to the franchise at some point in various forms of media. That being said, is it any surprise that Bones has been noted for making several references to the films? Just recently, on the Official Star Wars Blog, John Francis Daley was highlighted as name dropping - specifically that of the Sith Lords - in an episode of Bones.

The scene dialog went as follows:

Sweets: “It’s like the Sith Lords, man, there’s always only two of them.”
Booth: “Did you just Star Wars us?”

The funny thing is that not only do they note that the reference was made, but they give you a link to watch the full episode (The Knight on the Grid) and tell you exactly where in the episode the quote takes place! (In case you were wondering, it’s around 17:30.)

I have to say I’ve become a really big fan of Sweets this season. When they first introduced him, I wasn’t so sure, and since I didn’t know if he’d be sticking around, I didn’t make a lot of effort to get attached to him. But now, I’m really glad they’ve kept him around, and I really enjoy what he brings to the cast. Especially now that Angela and Hodgins have broken off their relationship - it gives him a lot more issues for him to delve into - regardless of their hesitation to talk to him. Also, we’ve seen just a very little bit of his sessions with Zack, and I’m really hoping they do more of that.

Anyway, TheTVaddict has an interview with John Francis Daley that’s short and sweet, but worth the read. They actually talk some about his previous projects, which I personally have no knowledge of, so that part kind of went over my head. Except for the part that while he admits that he’s been in some work situations that weren’t as pleasant as things on the set of Bones, he very diplomatically refuses to name names or point fingers. I don’t think it’s any secret by now the biggest news of the Bones panel at Comic Con. Booth and Bones will get naked this season - together, that is! Unfortunately for us, though, Hart Hanson was a very cautious about how he worded his statement, which implies that it’s not as cut and dry as it may seem. There are so many ways that the writers could get Booth and Bones together where they just happen to be naked, or where circumstances deem it necessary, that “naked” doesn’t mean but so much. Without some hanky panky, well, naked is just naked. After all, Bones has already seen Booth naked, and we all remember how she reacted - very professionally and even complimentary of him for not being puritanical about it. (That was such a great scene!!!) However, I can’t wait to see how they play it out - and how “professional” Booth is able to be about it. Seems like even Bones had a tiny bit of trouble keeping a straight face at the sight of Booth naked, so who knows? Maybe even she’ll fall apart (at least a little bit) at the combined nakedness. We can only hope!

In other romantic news, we also have the promise of a few other romances to look forward to this season. Bones will be dating at least two other men, and we already know that Angela’s husband and a previous girlfriend will resurface to cause trouble for her and Hodgins. Who else? Sweets may be headed for a romance of his own - which I think is just great. Not that he could EVER come close to replacing Zack, but his character has grown on me and I think that seeing him grow as part of the team on the show may just help to heal some of the wounds left by Zack’s defection from the world of the sane and not-murders. Also to look forward to is a possible relationship for Cam - with one of Angela’s old flames, no less! How odd would it be for Cam to hook up with Roxy? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
