First David Boreanaz, now James Marsters…
Well, David Boreanaz did it, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that his old Buffy and Angel buddy James Marsters, aka Spike, has joined him in a role of his own where he plays for the other team. (Okay, technically both teams, but let’s not split hairs…) David’s role in the movie Suffering Man’s Charity as a gay man (played opposite Alan Cumming) garnered him a lot of attention, and Marsters’s guest appearance on the TV show Torchwood should raise plenty of eyebrows in his direction as well!
As Captain John, a Time Agent and thief, he plays the reformed Captain Jack’s former partner in crime. He returns to bring Capain Jack, played by John Barrowman, back into his thieving ways, and during his stint on the show shares a lip-lock with him.
In an interview in TV Guide (a nice, full-page spread!), Marsters says “my character is way beyond bisexual. Spike was a romantic. This guys would do anything that moves.” About the experience, he said, “I have never kissed a man on film before, but luckily my girlfriend was there and she said it was always a fantasy of hers that I would kiss another man. She though it was really hot.”
As much as this part is a huge stretch from his character Spike, whom we loved to hate and then came to love, Captain john is definitely an interesting role to see him in. Although I haven’t seen the show myself, Marsters’s guest spot may be enough to get me to watch at least a few episodes. According to Marsters, Torchwood is “a funny, subversive show like Buffy.” That alone should make me happy!
“The character [of Captain Jack] is sexy and villainous,” and hopefully we’ll see him on the show again. If not, there’s always hope to see him again on Smallville as Professor Fine/Brainiac!
