The He in the She - last new episode for a while…
Let me start by saying… wow. I’m impressed. I’m going to have to give this a little more thought - there was a lot of really interesting points brought up in this episode, and there was so much more than the usual murder case to solve. I loved how they dealt with the issue of the sex change murder victim being a pastor, and how that impacted his/her decision to have the sex change and what it meant for those around him/her.
I also loved how they showed different aspects of faith. There was the typical televangelist, preaching on TV, convincing people to send in their money, blasting anyone who was different and basically being extremely narrow-minded and proud. There was the wife, who was nothing but proud, who showed no humility or grace, who claimed God’s promises but didn’t extend his forgiveness to others around her. There was the church congregation, made up of ex-convicts and drug addicts who sought redemption from a God who offered it freely. And there was the son, who lived the life of his parents until he couldn’t take the hypocrisy any longer and left to find his own place, his own beliefs, and his own ministry. He embraced the God of forgiveness, and upon discovering the true fate of his father, embraced his decision with acceptance and peace.
Booth and Bones also had their typical religious discussions and disagreements, and while Bones still thinks religion is a bunch of superstitions, it still shows through in his personality that Booth’s faith
plays a large part in who he is and why he is the way he is.
The topic was very sensitive, and I applaud the way it was handled. I honestly don’t know what the church’s response, or I guess I should say what God’s response to a sex-change is/would be, but this episode really made me think about it differently than I probably would have before.
